Remote Sensing Scientist Passive Microwave Imaging Level 2 Products (Copernicus)

EUMETSAT is Europe’s meteorological satellite agency - monitoring the weather and climate from space - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

We are currently looking for an experienced Remote Sensing Scientist to join our international team of young and inspiring engineers and industry professionals, tasked with driving innovation within the Space, Satellite and Earth Observation sector.

This role is routed in the mission of EUMETSAT and will provide the opportunity to work with leading IT, Space and Earth Observation organisations and domain experts to make a positive impact on society!

The Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer (CIMR) is one of the high priority missions that will support the European Union Copernicusprogram expansion activities. One objective of the CIMR mission is to provide high-spatial resolution microwave imaging radiometry measurements and derived products with global coverage, measuring fundamental quantities associated with large-scale ocean-atmosphere processes over the global ocean. To address Copernicus user needs over the global oceans, EUMETSATwill operationally provide a subset of the mission products belonging to two main product families, the global ocean family (including Sea Surface Temperature, Sea Surface Salinity, Ocean Surface Wind Vector), and the atmospheric product family (Precipitation rate, Liquid Water Path, Total Column Water Vapour). Synergy with the complementary EPS-SG microwave imaging missions will also be relevant in supporting users’ needs.

Within the Passive Microwave and Radio Occultation (PMRO) Competence Area of the Remote Sensing and Products (RSP) Division, the Remote Sensing Scientist - Passive Microwave Imaging Level 2 Product (Copernicus) will lead the development of the processing capabilities supporting the derivation of geophysical products over the global ocean from CIMR data, including the provision of meaningful uncertainty estimates.

The PMRO Competence Area consists of staff with a wide range of expertise in the production and exploitation of Earth Observation data, including microwave sounders and microwave imagers. A dedicated team is devoted to each class of instruments. The successful candidate will join the Microwave Imaging team, and will interact with the Marine Applications Competence Area in RSP. Joining EUMETSAT in this role offers a unique opportunity to develop a professional career in a highly motivating environment.

What you’ll be doing

· Acquire and maintain an in-depth understanding of the observational capabilities of the CIMR mission and the complementary EUMETSAT core missions over the global ocean to support the Copernicus users;

· Support the prototyping and operational implementation of advanced algorithms for retrieval of ocean and atmospheric product families from CIMR data and other EUMETSAT missions;

· Perform scientific analysis with radiative transfer simulations (and other means) in the microwave spectral range to determine structure and source of errors associated to the retrieved Level 2 products, as required;

· Plan, develop and perform product calibration and validation activities related to the relevant CIMR L2 products, including development of required tools and methods;

· Provide product quality analysis and long-term monitoring of Copernicus atmospheric and global ocean products from the CIMR mission in support of Copernicus service operations;

· Initiate, lead and manage scientific studies to support the development of CIMR Level 2 processing;

· Play an active role in relevant operational and scientific interactions with the European Space Agency (ESA), the Copernicus Marine Monitoring Service and user communities;

· Compilation of presentations and reports for reporting to EUMETSAT Delegate Bodies, as required.

What we offer

· Excellent salary, of up to Euro 7,500 / month NET (after tax) based on skills and experience;

· Flexible working time including additional flexi-leave;

· Private medical coverage for employee and family;

· Attractive final salary pension;

· 30 days of annual leave + 14.5 days public holidays;

· Training and development support;

· Relocation allowance and support (if applicable).

Requirements

Qualifications

· Advanced University degree or equivalent, in oceanography, remote sensing, physics, meteorology or another relevant discipline.

Skills and Experience:

  • In-depth knowledge and demonstrated experience in:

Level 2 retrieval of geophysical products over global ocean from microwave observations, in particular for the CIMR ocean and atmospheric product families;
Radiative transfer in the microwave spectral range (1-300 GHz);
Characterisation/validation of geophysical products uncertainty;

  • Knowledge of the calibration and validation of microwave satellite instrument products;
  • Proven experience in managing scientific projects, activities, and reporting;
  • Proven programming skills using a higher programming language as well as scripting languages, such as Python or Matlab;
  • Proven experience in working with the international user communities, researchers and scientists;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to apply these to the interactions within a team, across teams in an international environment.

APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED IN ENGLISH. WE WILL BE UNABLE TO CONSIDER APPLICATIONS SUBMITTED IN OTHER LANGUAGES.

EUMETSAT is an international organisation employing staff from across all 30 member states and this role is being advertised on multiple international job boards, but please note that this role would be based in Darmstadt, Germany and would require international applicants to relocate if successful.
